Formed in 1966 and with 6 NBA Championships to its credit, the Chicago Bulls are one of the most beloved teams of all Chicago sports teams. They play their home games in the United Center and are known for having one of the greatest dynasties in sports history during the 90s, winning six championships in eight years.
The history of the Bulls can be separated into two distinct eras, pre Michael Jordan and post Michael Jordan; and it all hinged on a coin toss! The Bull’s earliest years met with some success but later drifted to the bottom of the stack. They were in the cellar of the league. Then came the coin flip. In 1979 the Bulls lost the coin flip for the right to pick first in the NBA draft. If they had won they would have picked Magic Johnson, setting their path in place. Instead they lost and picked Gail Goodrich. Combined with a number of other picks and through the 1983 season their path was not a successful one so they decided to change direction.
In 1984 the Bulls received the third pick of the draft and chose Michael Jordan out of UNC. The team decided to rebuild around this shooting guard. As the records began to fall you could say the rest is history. Through complementary draft picks and trades the Bulls built their team. From 1990-1993 the Bulls won three consecutive championships with Jordan breaking record after record. Then Michael Jordan retired, to the shocked amazement of basketball everywhere.
But in 1995 Jordan announced he was coming out of retirement back to the Bulls. 1997-99 saw three more championships and the final retirement of Jordan, this time for good. Many records were set along the way, both individual and team, most of which stand to this day. In short, there will probably never be another dynasty like the Bulls of the 1990s.
